Crusader Kings 3 is getting its own version of the A Game of Thrones mod, creator foxwillow has announced.
Co-led by foxwillow and kuczaja, CK3’s AGoT mod is currently in early development, as the framework on which newer Paradox games are based has required modders to adapt their creations as well.

“It was hardly November when kuczaja and I began to run with the creation of some kind of foundation for the AGoT future, all while having zero concrete idea of the direction to set our feet,” the post reads.
“In many ways that still hasn’t changed; our somewhat uncertain process of preparation began mostly with using newer Paradox games (like Imperator) to re-write and re-format our files. We expected some changes and optimization in code, and I started trying to change and upscale our graphics files to be more versatile in preparation for any upcoming resizing,” it continues.
The news that the smallest unit in a province would shift to baronies in Crusader Kings III was one such change.
“That meant some ambitious map changes (based on a combo of CK2/Imperator knowledge) while trying to make our files versatile for future size changes as necessary.”
As foxwillow notes, “chunks of this tentative prep will not randomly and conveniently fit together in the end” which makes it likely that it’ll be a while before players get to play as A Game of Thrones characters in Crusader Kings III.
“The active goal is to get as diverse and specialized a team together to simultaneously compartmentalize responsibilities and work cohesively. This is so we can release something (1) as soon as possible and (2) as successful as possible after CK3’s release,” foxwillow said.
The team is recruiting people who want to help with bringing Crusader Kings III’s A Game of Thrones mod to life.
A later update, explained how the territory contained in the duchy of The Crossing would differ in CK3’s version of the mod.
Initially, made up of Mistlewood, The Twins, Erenford, and Freylands, it now “basically covers the same amount of physical space as only ‘The Twins’ and ‘Freylands’.”
“It isn’t just that the 4 CK2 counties have been put into a slightly smaller portion of the Riverlands this time. It’s that the de jure duchy currently contains 12 counties and 52 provinces,” foxwillow explained before promising that a bigger update would follow soon.
CK2’s AGoT mod was one of the most popular total conversion mods, letting players rule over portions of Westeros and engage in the usual conquest and intrigue, albeit in a vastly different scenario.
As of April 17, 2023, Crusader Kings III’s A Game of Thrones mod has entered open beta, bringing the total conversion into players’ hands.
Available via Steam Workshop, it features two starting dates – or bookmarks – that let you experience Robert’s Rebellion – picking a side in the conflict between Aerys II Targaryen and – or the Crowned Stag, which follows the events after Robert Baratheon takes the Iron Throne.
Among the mod’s promised features count Mega Wars, that grant more opportunities “for lesser vassals to take what is rightfully theirs,” alongside the ability to play as a Wildling or a member of the Night’s Watch.
The mod’s map features “over 6,100 baronies, with over 1,000 playable counties.” In the future, the team behind the mod plans to include the Free Cities, Valyria, the Great Dothraki Sea, and beyond.
“Though CK3AGOT has been in development for a long time, we stand on the shoulders of CK2AGOT, which was developed over a decade. Some features may be incomplete, like localization or a need for a breastplate stretcher for some armors,” the mod’s development team wrote, explaining why they opted to initially launch in beta.
We wanted to focus on bringing a stable, enjoyable AGOT experience to CK3, and build out the content loved in CK2AGOT in future releases.”
At the time of updating this article with the news of the mod’s release, it already has over 75,000 subscribers on Steam Workshop.
